GIBSON JR, John Ray (1941 - 2019)
Mr. John Ray Gibson Jr., 77, Dayton, OH, formerly of Davis Bend, passed away Friday afternoon, January 18, 2019 at the Kettering Medical Center. He was the son of the late John Ray and Pauline Coffey Gibson born on November 3, 1941 in Middlesboro.
He was a retired assembly line worker of 32 years from General Motors and attended the Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and faithfully served his country in the Kentucky National Guard. He enjoyed gardening auctions, flea markets and garage sales. His favorite television programs were Wheel of Fortune, Moonshiners, old westerns and James Bond. He also enjoyed watching cattle and tractor auctions. As Phil Robertson would say, “He was a low tech man in a high tech world.”
His favorite pastime was working in his barn on special projects and helping take care of his very special granddaughter. He was a perfectionist at everything he did. He was a collector of antique tools and also enjoyed woodworking. He had the ability to take something that most would think of as a piece of trash and turn it into something useful.
On May 28, 1966, he united in marriage with Shirley Partin in Jellico, TN and to this union two children were born.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Rev. Franklin Clifton.
Survivors include his loving wife, Shirley Partin Gibson of Dayton, OH; two children, Michael Gibson and Robyn Kirk both of Dayton, OH; a very special granddaughter, Sydney Kirk; two sisters, Kermit Ann Clifton of Monroe, NC and Billie Opal Patterson and husband, Jerry, of Belleville, MI; a nephew, Jerry Patterson Jr. and wife; nieces, Paula Sulak and husband, Mike, of MI, Jennifer Clifton of VA and Laura Smith and husband, Matthew, of Monroe, NC; several great nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Sunday, January 27 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Dale Phipps officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Davis Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Jaxton Hammons, Rick Hammons, Johnny Broughton, Scott Partin, Robby Partin and Pete Miller. Honorary bearers will be the staff of Kettering Medical Center, Southwest Cardiology Group, Gem City Home Care, FNP-C Ingrid Hendel, Wendi Eshbaugh and Michelle Martin.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Sunday prior to the funeral hour.
Because Mr. Gibson suffered multiple health problems over the last few years, he developed a cardiac rhythm disorder that limited his activities of daily living. As a result, expressions of sympathy may go to either the American Heart Association or the Heart Rhythm Society in his memory.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
