CORNETT, Ewing (1928 - 2019)

Mr. Ewing Cornett was born February 14, 1928 in Harlan County to Lawrence and Dora Brown Cornett and passed away Thursday morning, October 10, 2019 at Baptist Health Corbin.  He was the last surviving child of his seven siblings.

On November 4, 1950, he was united in marriage with Edith Jackson at Cannon and to this union three children were born.

Ewing was drafted and served two years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  He was employed for many years at Chappell Dairy in Harlan as a milkman and later became an over the road trucker retiring from Consolidated Freightways in 1996.  After retirement, he worked his most favorite job, employed part time with Knox Funeral Home.  He was a member of the First Christian Church of Barbourville and was very involved in the Masonic organization, with memberships in the Barbourville Masonic Lodge, Barbourville Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Harlan Shrine Club and the Hillbilly Club.  He spent countless hours of time dedicated to raising money to benefit the kids of Shriner’s hospitals.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter, Sharon Cornett and seven siblings, Chester Cornett, Mildred Cornett Parsons, Mamie Cornett Anderson, Maurice Cornett, Melvin Cornett, Alma Cornett Self and Grace Cornett Sturgill.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years and 11 months, Edith Cornett of Cannon; two daughters, Penny Staley and husband, Greg, of Tipp City, OH and Patricia Bertram and husband, Mike, of Troy, OH; five grandchildren, Lauren Brune and husband, Nathan, Allison Staley, Erick Staley and wife, Emily, Abigail Bertram and Travis Bertram; a dear brother-in-law, Morris Jackson; many nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, October 14 at 2 P.M. with Rev. David Barnard and Rev. Dr. Bobby Drew Lawson officiating.  A Masonic service will follow.  He will be laid to rest in the Jones-Hurst Cemetery with military funeral honors.

Casket bearers will be Mike Bertram, Travis Bertram, Greg Self, Nathan, Brune, Greg Staley and Eric Staley.  Honorary bearers will be the staff of Knox Funeral Home, Dr. Richard Carter and his wonderful staff.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday after 12 noon until the funeral hour.
